The Porch

The Porch, while it would seem that it shouldn't get its own page, is actually an essential place in the Lit House. It even has two parts - the closed in porch that frames the side of the house, or the outside portion which greets the visitors as they enter. The inside porch is a wonderful place to have large, group meetings, play rehearsals, or a a vigorous game of cards. Its the only place in the house where loud noise is anywhere close to tolerated, but it also oddly serves as a good place to get away from the rest of the crowd, too. Guest speakers, like visiting playwrights or authors, usually use this space for their presentations, as it is best suited to the large crowds they bring in.

The outside porch, like the Reading Room, also is a center for socializing. Even in the rain or snow, people are out there enjoying themselves, laughing, and playing music on the guitar.  Also, the outside porch provides perhaps the prettiest array of stars at night time.
