The Printshop

The Printshop is a little-visited place by people who just pass through the House, but for people who really want to get involved, it is a center of creativity. Filled to the brim with gadgetry, age-old machines, and fine papers and inks, the Printshop is a living, breathing museum.

While this place can seem intimidating to people who are just arriving to the Lit House, the printshop is certainly worth a visit. I, your humble tour guide, seemed a little unsure about the place myself! The machines looked so powerful, but I was afraid of breaking them or doing something wrong! Mike, the owner of all of the machines and master printer, runs two workshops simultaneously to help students get acquainted with the printshop. The beginner's class runs on Tuesday evenings, while the advanced workshop is on Thursday nights. In these classes, students get to learn how to set their own type, work the machines, and even try their hand at binding their own books if they wish to. The printshop also hires student printers or "printer devils", to aide Mike in his work.
